Furnishing the house is a difficult task when you haven’t a clear picture of the layout. Everyone wishes for having unique, and custom made furniture to get a glamour look for their home. What if someone can use a tree instead of wooden furniture?
Gavin Munro, an artist, uses fully grown trees for manufacturing furniture. Though it can not believe such a thing in the real world, his effort led to building creative designs than the traditional ones.
It is called “Zen 3D printing” cause it looks like a real tree growing inside the house. Rather chopping woods, this method need more effort and patience to build chair, lamps or tables.
It was an idea from the childhood of Munro, after observing a bonsai in his garden that had taken on the shape of a chair.
In essence, it’s an incredibly simple art. You start by training and pruning young tree branches as they grow over specially made formers. At certain points, we then graft them together so that the object grows into one solid piece—I’m interested in the way that this is like an organic 3D printing that uses air, soil, and sunshine as its source materials. After it’s grown into the shape we want, we continue to care for and nurture the tree while it thickens and matures before harvesting it in the winter and then letting it a season and dry. It’s then a matter of planing and finishing to show off the wood and grain inside.” Munro explains.
