There are few barriers for a woman who is entering in a male dominant industry for work. Since those industries labeled as male-oriented, being women are hindering fact to uplift the carrier of working women. Space discovering is also one of a significant profession which leads male in most of the times. Two women Christina Koch and Jessica Meir were able to change the history by being Women Astronauts.

They both were selected as women astronauts to replace a battery unit that is failed to increase its power capacity. Before installing new batteries, it was needed to upgrade the prevailing batteries. So they were started their spacewalk at 7:50 a.m. E.T. on October 18th, 2019.

Christina Koch

Koch was graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. As same as she graduated from the NASA Academy program at Goddard Space Flight Center in 2001. Before joining this project, she traveled to the Arctic and Antarctic regions by spending three and a half years of her lifetime.

Jessica Meir

When calls for Meir, she is the first Swedish woman Astronauts in space since she holds dual citizenship in Sweden and the USA. She has a Master of Space Studies degree and a Ph.D. in marine biology. Also, she has done some work at Harvard Medical School.

How many women astronauts are there?

According to NASA there 59 women in total including cosmonauts, astronauts, payload specialists.

  • 8 women from Soviet/Russian Programme
  • 4 from the Chinese Programme
  • 50 women have flown with NASA

Who is the First woman in space to do the spacewalk?

Within the last 35 years, 12 U.S. women were accomplished 40 spacewalks where Svetlana Savitskaya treated as the first woman Astronauts who did the spacewalks. Even the men’s presence for spacewalk is 500, the percentage of women’s participant is 10%. This happens just because of the Spacesuit that they have to wear on this extraordinary journey since NASA had only one medium-size space suit.
