We can hear violence against women and girls occurs in every nook and corner. Domestic violence is one of the unspoken problems all over the world. Women are the one who faced this due to severe and various factors which arise in their lives.
An artist in Turkey brought a heartbreaking but essential story that showed the sadness side of domestic violence. Turkey is a country where forty percent of women suffered from domestic violence. By bringing out the dark side of the violence a monument was built with the leftover shoes killed by their husbands.
These 440 pairs of shoes were hung up on the wall of a building in Istanbul, Turkey
To commemorate the 440 women in the country who were killed by their own husbands last year
The artist spoke to a newspaper as, “Here is Yanköşe project. One artist each year uses these two walls to exhibit their artworks. And this time, I wanted to exhibit work here. There are 440 pairs of shoes here. These 440 women’s shoes are equal to the number of women killed in 2018 in Turkey.”
It was made by a Turkish artist and graphic designer, Vahit Tuna
He chose high-heels as a symbol of feminine power and independence that he wishes all women had
The high-heels never belonged to the victims but rather are a cultural gesture
In some regions of Turkey, it’s traditional to put a person’s shoes outside after they pass
The family puts their shoes out as a symbol of mourning
The art installation is set up in a central location of Istanbul
The 440 shoes will stay on display there for 6 months
It is a sorrow to bring this kind of story for you. But it is better to understand the social reality, and it is time to fight against women’s violence.
